How Saltless Water Softeners Work. Saltless water softeners apply new technology that makes it possible to have water softeners that do not require salt to function. Instead, they use chelation technology to remove minerals like calcium and magnesium from your water. The key thing to understand is that salt-free water softeners are actually water conditioners. They don't actually soften the word – that is, they don't remove the calcium and magnesium that cause hard water like a traditional softener does.
